IgE tests and skin
prick tests are the most common allergy tests in the US, although
neither offers 100% specificity or sensitivity. There
are many occasions where these tests are simply not appropriate
(i.e. pediatric patients). The CAST® Leukotriene ELISA, a test
commonly used in Europe by clinicians and researchers, is now
available in the United States exclusively from ALPCO Diagnostics
and is a great alternative means of allergy diagnosis. The CAST®
Leukotriene ELISA is the first test which detects de novo
cysteinyl leukotrienes (LTC4, LTD4, and LTE4) in whole blood with
excellent sensitivity and specificity.
The most common allergies involve antibodies of the IgE class.
When people experience an allergic reaction, cross-linked
antibodies like IgE cause leukocytes to release mediators such as
leukotrienes. Leukotrienes are involved with common allergic
symptoms like bronchoconstriction, smooth muscle contraction,
increased capillary permeability and sometimes even anaphylaxis.
It is the release of these mediators that cause the allergic
reaction, and not the mere presence of IgE. For this reason, tests
that measure these mediators better illustrate the actual allergic
reaction than IgE tests.
Results with the CAST® Leukotriene ELISA can easily be determined
the same day utilizing the same ELISA techniques and equipment
already used in most labs. In addition, it offers qualitative and
quantitative data, so results not only demonstrate sensitization
to an allergen, but also the intensity of the allergic reaction.
CAST® Leukotriene ELISA is especially valuable because it is successful at detecting both IgE
mediated and non-IgE mediated allergies (pseudo-allergies).
Who may benefit from utilizing CAST® Leukotriene ELISA?
Scientists in many industries have utilized CAST® Leukotriene
ELISA to detect leukotrienes for a variety of
applications. Examples include:
-
Diagnosis of
IgE-mediated allergies
-
Diagnosis of
pseudo-allergies (non-IgE mediated)
-
Pediatric allergy
testing
-
Detection of food
allergies
-
Detection of drug
allergies
-
Monitoring
immunotherapy
The CAST®
Leukotriene ELISA has been used successfully all over the world
for the detection of cysteinyl leukotrienes using many different
allergens. Over 100 different allergens are available from ALPCO
Diagnostics and are specially produced for use in this assay, but
novel allergens can be used as well. Available allergens include:
-
Latex
-
Mites and Insects
-
Pollen from grass,
weeds, trees
-
Drugs like
analgesics, antibiotics, and anesthetics
-
Food/Food Additive
